Located in the Heart of the Rideau Lakes System, Smiths Falls combines the amenities usually only found in a larger center with a character and friendliness usually only found in a small town. Smiths Falls is located approximately 75 kilometers from downtown Ottawa and 100 km from Kingston. Smiths Falls began it's history as the mid-way point on the Rideau Canal between Kingston and Ottawa. In the 19th Century, as water was replaced by rail as the most important transportation link in Canada, Smiths Falls was once again fortunate to become a major point on both the CNR and the CPR railways. Today in Smiths Falls, trains still run along the CPR line, however, the CNR railway station is closed to travelers, but open to tourists, reincarnated as the Smiths Falls Railway Museum. The prosperity that followed World War II had a great impact on Smiths Falls. In 1962 Hershey Foods Corporation constructed its first plant outside of Hershey, Pennsylvania in Smiths Falls. Hershey selected Smiths Falls not only because Smiths Falls was situated close to Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, but also because Smiths Falls had an abundance of milk and clean water. Today, after numerous expansions and upgrades, the Hershey chocolate factory provides employment for many residents of Smiths Falls as well as entertaining many tourists. Today, visitors and citizens alike visit Smiths Falls' many tourist attractions to bask in our history and marvel about our future. |
